Playing video games has always been perceived as a time wasting activity. It adds no value, distracts kids from their education, and some parents (meaning mine) would even say that it rots the brain. This notion is somewhat true but mostly false. I would consider video games as a technological showcase of sorts and is embedded into our cultural fabric. There are myriads of studies with a conclusion that playing video games would enhance your mental capabilities. Strategy games exercises players’ critical thinking, visual memory, and even enhances spatial intelligence. Creativity and even language or communications skills can be enhanced through playing more complex “role-playing” games.
Problem solving skills, decision making that can be applied to real life scenarios can be developed through playing certain games. Intelligent individuals want to be challenged and playing video games has turned into a good outlet for intelligent to be challenged.
As with all things – Video game playing should be tempered or moderated. As much as we get plenty of benefits from playing video games, anything in excess can lead to addiction. And yes – people do get clinically addicted to playing video games
For me, the intelligence of a person cannot be measure on this alone. Even scientist doesn’t understand human intelligence as it is complicated to decipher. We have what we call multiples intelligence's. One may not excel in spatial but he might excel in interpersonal intelligence. We are unique individuals with unique abilities. It is for us to figure out what are we good at and enhance it.
